I would like to thank @[email protected] for his post about renaming network interface names in Linux

I wont repeat the content here as that would be redundant. I will say however it does allow you to rename most interfaces with ease.

If, for example your WiFi connection uses MAC address randomisation this will not work, you will need to decide if you want the potential gains having a random MAC address provides or if you want a consistent personalised interface name by deactivating the feature (my WiFi is set to use MAC randomisation.)

However where this becomes really very cool is for Ethernet connections.

I have a Thinkpad (no!, really Jase? I would never have known…) It is typically docked but sometimes I use it via the inbuilt Ethernet (cuz I’m dangerous like that) .

Using the instructions in the link above my network interfaces now show as e14eth (when using the laptop Ethernet) and dock when using the (you get it)

I think this would be very handy if using USB3 to Ethernet adaptors , especially when using a Linux based Firewall OS, I am pretty sure there will an equivalent config file for BSD based OS’s too. When time and motivation allows I will dig into this.

Anyhoo, thanks Andy for the howto you told me to read back in June (and I did!), I told you it was on my todo list, now its on my tadun list.
