Fake SSD’s (Again)

The last time I blogged about Fake SSD’s was here

Yesterday, I revisited NewLife (a charity shop- see linked post above)

They again had some SSD’s, again there were fake although still somewhat useful.

For £7.00 I purchased 3. 1 that claimed to be m.2 and 2 that appeared to be 2.5″ drive caddies.

In reality they were USB2, in the the 2.5″ drives soldered to the the USB superspeed connector, the m.2 caddie had a nice USB3 C to A pass-through connector, I have taken a few photos below.

I ran f3probe --destructive --time-ops /dev/fake_drive_designation

and after ran the f3fix line provided in the output that followed (see previous post linked above for full detail)

So what did my £7 get me

2 x 1TB USB2 drives and a 32GB USB2 drive!. Not at all bad.

I would not use them for anything mission critical or important, however having a 1TB Ventoy sounds like a pretty sweet idea (if the drive accepts a boot-loader) .
