So I arrived back home from the carboot sales and some shopping, after carrying out some household chores I decided to see what the condition of the T440s was in internally. I had expectations that it had already been stripped of anything good, when removed the external battery, it was dirty but in good order, I then loosened the screws and removed the back panel
I was greeted with the following vision, dirt, dust mould, ageing foam that was stick and tar like, a mystery HDD (in a caddy!), an internal battery (no pillowing) and a stick of RAM (the T440s has 4gb RAM on the motherboard so this was a nice find)

Hold on, did I say a stick of RAM and a HDD well, its a bit better than that, it was an Intel 240GB SSD and 8GB work of DDR3L RAM!

I then set about cleaning the externals and internals, removed they keyboard and cleaned that too using 70% Isopropyl alcohol wipes, a toothbrush and 99.99% Isopropyl alcohol spray.

I then removed the screen

And brought out the donor machine

After removing the screen assembly from both I then reversed the process to complete the £3 Thinkpad.

Something was still missing though, so I rummaged through my Thinkpad parts box to locate it

With the red track-point nub attached it looks completed.
I then installed Windows 11 (using Rufus, which activated without issue) and then ran Lenovo Vantage update, all the firmware was up to date the touch screen worked and all worked well and and looks Good….
…..Except that when it got hot the fan started up making a noise akin to a bike when you add a playing card to the forks, I checked for any immediately obvious causes but was not able to locate the cause, I will wait for another day to tackle that issue.
In the meantime, I think this is a win for reduce, reuse and recycle.
Thanks for reading.
Now that’s a pretty good looking full HD capable laptop J. That SSD alone is worth more than £3.
